Oyster River Pages VISUAL ARTs Editorial Internship 2025
Position: Visual Arts Editorial Internship
Location: Remote
Duration: 9 or 12 months (intern’s discretion)
Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per month
Wage: Unpaid or for course credit where applicable
Reports To: Visual Arts Editor Hannah Hirano
Job Overview:
In 2025, Oyster River Pages seeks an entry-level candidate interested in publishing to join our team and support our 8th issue as a visual arts editorial intern. At ORP, we are dedicated to publishing diverse and/or underrepresented voices that must be heard (read more about our mission here) and hope to find an intern as passionate about our goal as we are. As a visual arts editorial intern, you will assist your supervising editor in all aspects of the publishing process, from reviewing and selecting submissions to editing and final publication. If this all sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to apply. All applications will be read, thoughtfully considered, and replied to, though individual feedback will not be possible due to the amount of applications we receive. Note that you need not have any experience to apply; evidence of passion and interest is enough to be considered.
Writers and editors from marginalized and underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply and self-identify on their applications.
Responsibilities:
Reviewing art submissions for the main 2025 issue with the Visual Arts Editor
Attending check-in meetings with the visual arts editor to discuss submissions and give opinions on pieces. One-on-one editor/intern meeting cadence will depend on the stage of the publishing process but will be expected to be at least twice per month, ~45 minutes.
Assisting with editing and proofreading artist biographies and alt text. Comfort with standard written English conventions, grammar, spelling, etc. is desired.
Formatting final pieces, author photos, and author bios on the ORP website.
Composing an intern editorial statement for the website.
Attending monthly all-staff meetings.
Interns opting for the 12-month internship will take the lead on the visual section of the themed, intern-led special issue. This involves all aspects of the literary magazine publishing process: selecting a topic, producing the call for submissions, reading/evaluating/acquiring submissions, author communications, developmental/line editing, and website publication. The idea is that these skills are scaffolded and developed during the previous 9-months’ work with the visual arts editor on the general issue.
Qualifications:
Passion for uplifting historically decentered and marginalized stories
Interest in visual arts and media; candidate may or may not have a personal artmaking background
Capability to complete assignments unsupervised in an efficient and timely manner
Ability to clearly communicate in writing/openness to editorial feedback
Knowledge of grammatical rules
Discernment in dealing with vulnerable topics
Desire to collaborate
Internship Benefits:
Editorial guidance in online visual media publication
Opportunity to develop work for publication through ORP’s review-oriented Soundings page
Professional recommendations detailing the range and specific skills of their work
Mentoring and the building of specific, resume-building skills in editing and publishing; intern will come away from the role with meaningful experience working in both Submittable and Squarespace
Twelve-month interns will have produced and published an issue of their very own
ORP will be happy to facilitate course credit where applicable
*Additional note that the time commitment for visual arts editorial interns is lower than that required of literary editorial interns due to the nature of reviewing visual rather than written submissions. This 5-10 hour/month request is contingent on the publishing timeline but encompasses submission review and editorial meetings.
To Apply:
Submissions are completed only over Submittable. Any applications sent over email will not be considered. We require a one-page résumé/CV and a cover letter in addition to the questions found at the Submittable link.
References are appreciated if possible and may be requested if you are invited to interview.
Applications are due on December 1st, 2024. If selected for an interview, you will hear back from us before December 15th, 2024.
