The Oyster River Pages (ORP) Internship is designed for individuals who align themselves with the values and creative expressions the journal embodies. ORP seeks to promote underrepresented voices in publication, believing that fostering diversity is the key to a more productive and compassionate society. We see artistic expression as holding potential in liminal spaces so that individuals and groups can speak and be listened to and understood in new ways.
In 2021, ORP would like to welcome an intern to collaborate with the new Emerging Voices Poetry Editor in curating a selection of poems by new poets for publication in the journal. Our ideal intern would be passionate about creating an inclusive space for marginalized poets.
Applications for 2021 Emerging Voices Poetry Internships will be accepted via Submittable February 5–February 19, 2021.
Intern responsibilities will be determined in conversation with the EV Poetry editor, according to ORP needs and the intern’s areas of interest. They may include:
Reporting weekly (or bi-weekly) on submissions
Providing compassionate and actionable feedback to submitters
Pitching specific pieces for potential publications
Consulting with editors on final publishing selections
Assisting in website uploading of bios, pictures, pieces, etc.
Assisting in emailing contributors regarding bios, pictures, declines, etc.
Maintaining social media presence
In 2021, interns will also take the lead in the concept, review, and publication process for ORP’s special-themed issue, scheduled for publication in December 2021. This will involve collaborating with the intern team, brainstorming and articulating the relevant theme for the issue with the guidance of ORP’s editors, as well as reviewing submissions in September and October.
The intern should be able to dedicate approximately ten hours per week to ORP work from March–December. In exchange, interns will receive:
Ten hours of editorial guidance on their own creative work
Mentoring about editing and publishing over the course of those months
ORP will be happy to facilitate course credit for student interns
Writers and editors from marginalized and underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply and self-identify on their applications.
