Lori White

Oyster River Pages: What is the most challenging aspect of your artistic process?

Lori White: When I'm working on an essay, I have to remember one of Rosellen Brown's rules for writers: Don't Be Attached to Results.

ORP: What would you say is your most interesting writing and/or artistic quirk?

LW: This isn't uncommon, but I write my best work when I hear the opening sentence first. I listen to it, over and over, for a few days before I sit down and write it out.

ORP: What do you think is the best way to improve writing and/or artistic skills?

LW: Consistency—or as my mother would say, discipline.

ORP: Do habits help or hinder creativity? Why or why not?

LW: Habits help my creativity because they provide me with structure, but those habits also must be flexible, able to adapt.
